Lighting Up Wishes!

For all of you on the West side of Michigan, this one's for you! Brad Boyink has created a fabulous Christmas Light Display of over 20,000 lights synchronized to six different Christmas carols that can be heard on FM 88.1. He plans to add a new song each week until Christmas.
He asks that those who come make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His goal is to raise $4,000 by Christmas - and he is well on his way! Already, hundreds of guests have visited his display!

The music and lights show runs from 6-10 p.m. nightly and 6-11 p.m. Saturdays. Boyink needs seven computers and extra electricity to power it. Boyink's Christmas Lights display is at 16204 Heather Court, Spring Lake, Michigan (click the link for a map).

If you are in the Grand Haven area, please make some time this weekend to visit the Boyink's lights and share some Holiday spirit with the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

Cards That Count Update!

Thank you so much to all of you that have sent cards! The response has been wonderful. I just wanted to let you know that the Make-A-Wish Foundation is in the lead with 38% of the cards! The campaign is not over yet, so keep 'em coming . . .

Again, if you send 5 Bounty e-cards on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundaiton, then send me one with a list of the 5 emails. I'll double your efforts and send each of those people my own Bounty e-card! My email is miss2006@missmichigan.org.

Holiday Magic

Tis' the Season for Holiday Magic!

One of my favorite Make-A-Wish Foundation programs is here - Holiday Magic! Each year, I look forward to seeing the new cards and reading the featured wish-stories. My favorite cards always seem to be those featuring the art of some of our wish-kids :) This year, I am privy to Gielle's creation - you met her just a few weeks ago in my post about Dishin' Up Wishes?

Now is the time to send your holiday greetings to friends and family - and wouldn't it be great if your card sent some magic as well? Then these are perfect! Cards feature art by our wish-kids, professional designs and photography. Each also carries with it a special story and notifies the recipient of the gift that was made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation through the purchase of the card. There are also gift inserts and new this year, a 2007 Make-A-Wish Calendar! Special imprinting is also available.

Upgrade

As you may have already noticed, En Pointe looks a little bit different today. I have upgraded to the new Blogger Beta program over the weekend, and lost a little bit of the beautiful formatting that you may have been used to. As I figure out this new program you will continue to see more changes. For instance check out the information bar to the right. You will notice some new additions to that space like information about myself and this blog, links to some important and frequently discussed websites, and archives. Although En Pointe may look a little more bland - it is much more functional! I promise, to make it prettier as I get better :) Thank you for reading!

America's Thanksgiving Day Parade

November 23, 2006 -

What an incredible honor to be a part of the 80th Annual America's Thanksgiving Day Parade! This event is more than just a parade, it is a time-honored tradition for families all over Michigan and a celebration of the Detroit spirit. Some of the highlights include . . .

  • A new, "old" route! This year, the parade followed a route modeled after the original in 1924 along Woodward Avenue beginning at Mack Ave. and ending in the beautifully restored Campus Martius Park. This new route highlighted so many of Detroit's precious jewels such as Fox Theater and spotlighted the newest additions such as Merchant's Row and Compuware.
  • Sunshine! Last year the bitter Michigan cold forced many spectators to watch on their televisions. This year, the sunshine helped to pack the streets!
  • Glove warmers :) It may have been sunny outside, but in the shade of my float those glove warmers were a blessing!
  • Shoes! My float just happened to be adorned with giant shoes and dancing princesses - my two favorite things :)
  • Starbucks Coffee. The Starbucks station just happened to be set up directly across the street from my float's parking spot. Something else to be Thankful for . . .
  • Volunteers - putting on such a spectacular event does not happen overnight! Volunteers donate more than 17,000 hours to painting floats, production, and of course marching in the parade! The volunteers are truly at the heart of this Thanksgiving tradition. I spoke to one such woman who has walked as a clown for more than 20 years. Her now grown son was in line at Hockeytown Cafe at 6 A.M. to get a window table to watch the parade!
  • The Detroit Police Department. Work so hard on Thanksgiving morning to ensure the security and safety of the thousands of folks who come downtown. They may occasionally give a ride to a lost, cold Miss Michigan - Thank you to Detroit's finest!
  • Holiday's on Parade - this year at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. With rides, games, entertainment, Parade floats and of course Santa Claus! Great family fun all weekend long!

Lighting up Northville

November 17, 2006 -
The Northville Lights Parade was one of the highlights of my year so far! This unique parade winds through downtown Northville at dusk - each float lighting the street and the MANY cold faces of the spectators. Riding in one of the coolest parade entries I've ever seen was just one thing that made this event so much fun. Our entry included 4 classic convertible VW bugs (3 decked out as reindeer!) and the junior workshop and senior chours girls from Miss Harriet's Dance Studio (my Alma mater)! Although I was not in a reindeer, my VW bug was adorned with custom lit signs that read "Miss Michigan and the Snowflakes!", and three 'snowflakes' and I kept each other warm on the parade route while singing along to Clay Akin's "Sleigh Ride" as the dancers performed around us!
What really made this event so special for me was that it was a true return home. Having grown up at Miss Harriet's Dance Studio, it was an honor to be welcomed back by the faculty, students and parents. After the parade, we went to Genitti's to warm up and celebrate. There I had the chance to speak to everyone and thank them for having me back. I also had the chance to talk to the students about my journey to become Miss Michigan and about how persistence truly does pay. Looking them in the eye and talking about how I got my start right where they are today and that they could get anywhere from here was one of those moments that make me truly grateful for this job.
Thank you to Miss Denise and Dr. Demary for having me back home at the Northville Lights Parade and rolling out the red carpet.

It's a very small world . . .

November 12, 2006

This photograph was taken Sundayat the WalMart Holiday Kick Off event in Troy. I am pictured here with Detroit Sports Legends Lem Barney and Rick Leach. Other celebrity sightings included Kim Adams, Rick Mahorn, Mitch Ryder and Santa Claus himself!
Ironically, this was the second time that week that Mr. Barney and I ran into each other! He was also on hand at the Dishin' Up Wishes event. No one was more happy than my traveling companion, Laura Hempton. She was so excited to meet him at Ford Field that she forgot to get a picture with him. Fortunately he was happy to pose with us just 3 days later:) I also heard rumors that he was also in America's Thanksgiving Day Parade today, although we didn't run in to one another. Either way Mr. Barney thank you for all that you do for our communities!

Dishin' Up Wishes 2007!

November 8, 2006

Gielle (blue dress) was one of the guests of honor at the first ever Dishin' Up Wishes at Ford Field. The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted her wish to have her own harp earlier this year - and it was truly a gift to all of us to hear her play. Gielle and her family spent a magical night at Ford Field! Thank you for joining us and sharing your incredible story!

I know, I know. . . I've never looked taller! Barry Stokes of the Detroit Lions is a huge supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He joined us at Ford Field to pose for pictures, meet the attendees and paint a ceramic piece that will become a gift for a very lucky wish-kid! He is quite the artist when it comes to painting puppy paws . . . I mean Lions claws :)

Busy Busy . . .

So Busy in fact that I havn't had a chance to share with you all what I've been up to in the last few weeks! I've been to Ford Field to Dish Up Wishes, Kalkaska to crown Miss Heart 2007, Troy to thank the hard working folks at Wal Mart, Muskegon to thank the creative and generous people at Krautheim's, Kalamazoo to take part in the Grand Opening of Rave Cineplex, Northville to ride with some 'Reindeer Bugs' in the annual Lights Parade, Sparrow Hospital in Lansing to paint orniments, Middleville for the first Miss West Michigan Pageant, back to Lansing to hang out with Jennifer Berry and take part in our Fall Forum, and just today Detroit for the 80th annual America's Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Whew!

Enjoy some of the pictures. . .

I Challenge you . . .

To send me an e-card!

Really, it's that easy!

Bounty Paper Towels, a Procter & Gamble company, is supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a program called "Cards That Count". Bounty's contribution to us will depend in large part on how many electronic "Cards That Count" are sent in support of the Foundation.
We're already doing well as one of the top three, only trailing the other charities by a few percentage points. Let's kick off November with a strong start! Bounty is donating $500,000 to three worthy charities, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation® is thrilled to have been selected as one of the beneficiaries. Each organization will receive $100,000, and the remaining $200,000 will be allocated based on the percentage of e-cards sent in support of each charity. You can help!!!

My challenge to you?
- Send 5 Bounty e-cards to your friends and family.
- Send me a Bounty e-card at
miss2006@missmichigan.org and include the names and emails of the people you sent a card to.
- In return, I'll personally send my own Bounty e-card to each of the names you submit and of course to you!

Who wouldn't want to get an e-card from Miss Michigan? (come on, it's for a good cause!)

Please visit www.quickerpickerupper.com to send your cards and help the Foundation “wipe up” the competition!

Need a reason to send a card? Try one of these:
* Thanks for the ride home yesterday * I'm sorry you're having a bad hair day * I like your new shirt * Thanks for taking care of my pet * Why didn't you tell me I had something in my teeth? * Have a wonderful week*

Dishin' Up Wishes!

There is still time to purchase tickets for the first ever Dishin' Up Wishes Event at Ford Field!

As if you needed more reason to come - one of the auction items is a pair of patron tickets to the 2007 Miss Michigan Pageant and an exclusive autographed photograph of me! (okay, okay - but the tickets are worth it!)

Hope to see you there!

Havana comes to Washentaw

November 4, 2006 -

It was a night of surprises at the Miss Washtenaw pageant this Saturday - being transported to Havana was only one . . .

The show opened with a touching dedication by the reigning Miss Washtenaw County, Ashlee Baracy, to her mother and her battle with breast cancer. Ashlee gracefully danced in a pink watercolor dress to the song "You Raise Me Up" as photographs flashed behind her. There was not a dry eye in the house, nor a question that we were in the presence of a truly beautiful woman. The night was meant to honor Ashlee and all her accomplishments as Miss Washtenaw, but it was the whole Baracy Family that was recognized for the grace in which they survived one of the most trying tests a family can endure. Ashlee, you have been a wonderful representative for Washtenaw and the American Cancer Society. Congratulations on all your accomplishments. I'll share the stage with you any day!

After such an emotional and inspirational opening - the mood changed to excitement and fun as all the contestants danced through the auditorium and to the stage to transport us to a Havana Night! Turn after turn the audience was surprised with a bongo player, surprise performances by Ahslee and the UofM Dance Team, and a beautiful Havana set. Betty - you outdid yourself! Congratulations on a stellar production!

Lucy Ann Lance from Talk Radio 1600 WAAM, returned as the Emcee. (You can catch her show weekdays from 6 - 9 AM). She was surprised herself when she was presented with the Washtenaw County Woman of Achievement Award for all of her dedication to the Washtenaw area, the Miss Washtenaw Pageant, and the Miss America ideals and values. Congratulations Lucy Ann and thank you for your continued support for this program!

It was an honor to be a part of the 2007 Miss Washtenaw County Pageant, to share a dance with Ashlee, and work with Laura Bloomensat and the volunteers and contestants. Thank you to everyone who made the night such a success!

Congratulations to all the contestants for all your accomplishments; the runners-up - Brittany Fox (4th), Karess Medvecz (3rd), Jenna McCormick(2nd), and Natalie Griffith (1st); and to the new Miss Washtenaw County 2007 Sheila Klein!

Congratulations Little Miss Michigan!

October 28- 29, 2006 -

When I arrived for lunch at the Holiday Inn, Muskegon with the 17 contestants for the first annual Miss America's Little Miss Michigan competition - I was blown away! Not only had they learned 2 production numbers, and all their walks - they seemed to already be best friends! As we dined on cheeseburgers and french fries they had many questions . . . What color was my dress? (gold) What was my talent? (dance en pointe) Was I ever Little Miss Michigan? (No) Do I have a dog? (A new puppy!) Where am I from? (Farmington Hills) Do I ever get nervous? (sometimes) How come I picked all the ham out of my salad? (I don't like ham)

Whew! These girls have some energy!

Then we got down to business and discussed some other important things such as the four points of the crown, how to prepare for interview, and the importance of having fun in everything you do. Finally they were released to their parents to get ready for their interviews - and I ran to Starbucks to get some energy to keep up with them!

The Little Miss program is the newest addition to our Miss Michigan Pageant Family. The competition is open to girls ages 8-12. All 17 contestants competed in Interview, Active Wear, Talent, and Party Dress and performed a fun production number on Saturday evening. Then Sunday afternoon, the top five were announced and competed for the crown. As Saturday night's Emcee, I can tell you from experience that these girls were having a ball! Unfortunately for the audience the real show was backstage where all the contestants were giggling and dancing around to whoever's music just happened to be playing. They even got me into trouble by roping me into chatting backstage while my mic was on!

Congratulations to all of our 17 contestants for making our first Little Miss Pageant such a success! I am proud to welcome our new Little Miss Michigan, Brooklynn Kay Lambert from Monroe, into the Miss Michigan family!

Thank you to Shelley, Juanita and Myia for all your hard work in starting this wonderful new tradition!

Flying High with Alitcor!

October 26th, 2006 -

Team members from Alticor paired up with staff and board members at the Make-A-Wish Foundation for a high-flying wish enhancement!

Alticor is sponsoring 9 year-old Cassidy's wish - a trip to Swim with the Dolphin's in the Caribbean next spring! As an extra special treat, Alticor invited the Grand Rapids area family to take part in a special Helicopter ride - right over their house!

I was invited to join the team to help send her off and welcome her back to solid ground. We enjoyed a wonderful tour of the hanger and some of the private jets and helicopters. The soundtrack of the day was Cassidy's favorite band the Cheetah Girls! After she safely landed, we enjoyed a party fit for a princess - she wore the crown while nibbling on chocolate covered strawberries! (She was kind enough to save me one when she learned they were my favorite).

Thank you Alticor for making so many wishes come true for Grand Rapids children!

Venturing Across State Lines . . .

October 6, 2006 - This weekend, I was honored to be invited to the 4th annual Military Appreciation Party in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This event is a testament to patriotism, family and community support for the men and women who have, and who continue to, sacrifice for the safety and freedom of our country.

Four years ago, Rick Stephens was eagerly awaiting his son Aaron's safe return home from Iraq. Along with the anticipation to welcome his son home, there was also a sense of apprehension as he remembered the no-so-welcome return from Vietnam that so many of his friends had endured. In an effort to prevent that for his son, Rick decided to throw a homecoming party. The party was such a hit that they decided to make it an annual event in appreciation for the United States Veterans.

Each year, they invite a Miss America state representative to be a part of the festivities - and this year that representative was me! It was a beautiful Fall day as I joined Rick and Aaron, Soldiers and Veterans, and the community of Fort Wayne in gratitude. I was nearly blown away when the Samaritan Helicopter landed just feet away! As we picked grass clippings our of my hair, I was interviewed by media sponsor WBTU Country 93.3 (some areas of Southern Michigan may have caught it!) Than we watched as four sky divers floated effortlessly to the earth. It turns out one of the ground crew was from Bronson, Michigan! We listened to bagpipes and cheered as the America legion members cruised into the grounds in a parade of motorcycles. A very special thanks to Matt, a U.S. soldier and my host who so kindly carried my heavy bag for two hours so that I could meet & greet with the guests. Now that is a gentleman!

Next I joined the Veterans in the VIP room as we dined on delicious food generously donated by countless restaurants before moving into the banquet hall for the ceremony. American Legion Post 178 of Garrett posted the colors and Julie Hadaway, the lead singer for a local band, sang the National Anthem. The Allan Country Veterans affairs Officer, George Jarboe, read the Proclamation declaring October 6th Military Appreciation Day. We also heard touching testimonies from VFW Indiana State Commander Larry Shaw and the event's guest of honor, Aaron Stephens - now a Drill Sergeant in Georgia. I also had the opportunity to thank the many Veterans for the sacrifice they have so courageously made for our Country. I shared with them the story of Evan, a patriotic little boy from Michigan who used his one wish to spend 15 minutes with President George W. Bush. After the close of the ceremony, the bands got started and it was time to celebrate! Although I could not stay all night, I happily signed autographs and took pictures with Fort Wayne's heroes. A highlight of the night was when Larry Shaw presented me with a replica of his unit's pin - a gift that will always remind me of the people of Fort Wayne and all the Veterans.

I was humbled to be a part of this awesome event. Thank you to Rick Stephens, Aaron Stephens, Dale Christopher and WBTU 93.3, Bonnie and Amy, and all of the sponsors who made this important day possible. In an age where we constantly question our leaders, our foreign policy, our media, and our belief's - let us never forget to thank and pray for the soldiers who have fought and who continue to fight to protect our safety and our freedoms.

Number 11, Sigma Group

October 5, 2006 - That's the group and contestant number I will have at the Miss America prelims in January! What does this mean? I will be the 11th contestant (out of 18 in my group) to compete in Interview on Wednesday morning, Swimsuit and Evening Wear on Thursday night, Talent on Friday night, and On-Stage Question on Saturday night. As you may already know the final night of the Miss America pageant will be held on Monday, January 29th in Las Vegas and broadcast on CMT! On the final night of competition, only the Top 10 (as determined by the preliminary competition) will compete for the title of Miss America 2007! Tickets go on sale December 1st at ticketmaster.com.

Stepping towards a wish-come-true

October 1, 2006 - Sunday was one of the most meaningful opportunities I have had as Miss Michigan thus far - the Ann Arbor Walk-for-Wishes at "the Big House'. When we first arrived, we had plenty of time to mingle with the walkers, take in the beautiful fall day and enjoy lunch donated by Buffalo Wild Wings. After that, I visited with the folks from Coldstone Creamery for the second day in a row! Their support of Make-A-Wish is incredible - fortunately I was able to walk it off later that day.

I was honored to be a small part of a very touching opening ceremony. The Foundation usually invites wish families to partake in these events so that the walkers have a deeper sense of purpose as they walk and the families can share their incredible stories and gratitude. None was quite as incredible as that of 'Mighty Matt,' an energetic 8-year-old Michigan fan who passed away shortly after receiving his most heart-felt wish in that very stadium, almost one year ago to the day. To read about mat's story, please see the post entitled "Mighty Matt."

After the opening ceremony, the walkers were off! Terri Doodge (my fabulous traveling companion) may never accompany me to another event again! I warned here that we would be walking the 5K but I forgot to mention how many hills there are in Ann Arbor! (Sorry Terri) Fortunately, I had to be back to the stadium early to prepare for the closing ceremony so we only walked half the route. We made it back with plenty of time to review the script with Susan Lerch, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan President and CEO, and Mark from Ann Arbor's 107 One and media sponsor for the event.

In addition, we were fortunate to have with us one of Michigan's first wish-recipients, Derrick.
In 1985, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan granted his wish to meet his favorite Detroit Tiger, Lance Parrish. Today, Derrick is a successful, cancer-free, freelance film and photography artist. During the closing ceremony, he shared with us how much a wish-come-true had meant for him during one of the biggest trials of his life. His presence was just one example of his continued appreciation for the work that the Foundation does and we were grateful to have him back. During the closing ceremony, I had the privilege of introducing Paul and Amelia to the hundreds of people who had walked to make their wishes come true. Paul will soon be experimenting with the wildly popular duo on the Discovery channels "Mythbusters" and Amelia will finally experience the peace and beauty of Hawaii with her family.

Finally, thank you to all of you who helped me raise more than $800 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation! My personal fundraising total was added to those of the many UM Stars members who also come out to walk. A big congratulations to UM Stars Team for being named the top fundraising school group for the 2007 Ann Arbor Walk-for-Wishes!

Go Green! Go White!

September 30, 2006 - Saturday I had the chance to go back to visit my alma mater, Michigan State University, for the homecoming game against Indiana. The weather was miserable but East Lansing was a buzz with students and Alum celebrating Spartan pride! I joined Warren Pierce on air for the WJR MSU homecoming tailgate show before the game to talk about my time at MSU and my plans to return, my platform and the beginning of America's Stars for the Make-W-Wish Foundation, and the 2007 Miss America Competition! I was honored to open for the real celebrity and Grand Marshall for the homecoming parade - Kermit the Frog. As for the game, let's just say 'it's not easy being green. . . "

A cold, sticky, yummy good time . . .

Main Street in Royal Oak was THE place to be Thursday evening to mingle with champions, enjoy free scoops of ice cream and make wishes come true! Coldstone Creamery’s around the country gave away free scoops of wish-kid Cole’s Creation – a wonderful concoction of chocolate ice cream with yellow cake, chocolate chips and rainbow sprinkles mixed in - delicious! In exchange, ice cream lovers made a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help make wishes come true. I joined a few of the Detroit Tigers wives to scoop, mix and serve on the famous ‘cold-stone’ in Royal Oak. So many people stopped by and I ended up standing near the cash register signing autographs and checking out all the different creations. I did manage to catch up with a very special wish-kid, Evan who just a few months ago realized his most heartfelt wish to travel to Washington D.C. and meet President George W. Bush! As his father recounted the experience for us, Evan was twisting and grinning with excitement as he re-lived his wish-come-true. I also shared a scoop of ice cream with Kimberly Craig of WXYZ Channel 7 News after a quick interview for the 6 o’clock news. Mike Meroff, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, joined his wife who was working hard behind the stone for a quick bite himself! Many children (of all ages) were pleased to enjoy their free Cole’s Creations, their own creations, samples of Coldstone’s new smoothies, and some good old fashioned family fun downtown. When I caught up with this young lady, she wanted to get a better look at the Miss Michigan crown. When I assured her it was okay to touch it, she slowly reached out her hand. When I asked her what she thought, her reply was “it’s kinda sticky.” Hummm. I don’t know if it was the ice cream or a few months worth of hairspray, but either way it was not the reaction I had expected.

A huge thank you to all of the managers and staff at the Royal Oak Coldstone Creamery on Main Street – who no matter how long the lines got or how many scoops they helped us amateurs mix - they remained most energetic, friendly and helpful. They are the true heroes of the day!

Did you miss it? It’s not too late! Visit your local Coldstone Creamery anytime in October and make a wish come true by purchasing a hanging star with your ice cream! To find a location nearest you, visit www.coldstonecreamery.com.

Miss Southwest Michigan 2007

What an honor to be the emcee and perform at the Miss Southwest pageant this past weekend! The highlight of attending any local pageant for me, is catching up with my Miss Michigan sisters and the local directors – and Miss Southwest was no exception! I had the pleasure of spending the day with Tiffany Griffin, Miss Southwest 2006, Nina Davuluri, Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen and also Melissa Moser-Stamp, Miss Southwest 2005 and this year’s producer! Fredric and I found some time to catch up with one another as well and it was a treat to see Kimberly if only for a few minutes. Kathy Dood, former executive director of the Miss Greater Grand Rapids Pageant was a judge. Alongside her was Maria Kamara-Hagemeyer, Miss Michigan 1994 and my judge at state this year!

Congratulations to Ashley Swanson, the new Miss Southwest Michigan’s Outstanding Teen and Bethany Johnson, the new Miss Southwest Michigan!

Tiffany – I can’t wait to see you compete throughout the year. The Miss Michigan program is so blessed to have you. I’m going to ignore that little Irish outbreak because I love you – best of luck to you in everything you do!

Thank you so much to Fredric and the entire Miss Southwest crew – you made me feel right at home! Thank you so much for all that you do – it is volunteers just like you that make up the foundation of the Miss America Organization.

Making Wishes Come True with 100.3 WNIC!

On Thursday, September 14 I was honored to be a guest celebrity on 100.3 WNIC’s annual “Making Wishes Come True Radiothon” presented by Gordon Chevrolet in Garden City! I joined Kevin O’Neill and Tamie Lockheart on air to talk about my experiences with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and how I will be using my position as Miss Michigan to share the power of a wish! I was on-site during the drive home from 4 – 6 pm to sign autographs and pose for pictures in exchange for a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I was having such a great time however, that I didn’t leave until 7:30! Many people stopped by including a former teacher, wish recipients that I had worked with, and our own Miss Sprit of the State’s Outstanding Teen Sarah Leahy and her Mom Amy! As it turns out, Kevin O’Neill is a huge fan of the Miss America Organization and couldn’t resist trying on the crown after Tamie!

This year’s event was a success! We reached our goal and raised more than $30,000 to help make wishes come true for children across Michigan.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible including Kevin O’Neill, Tamie Lockheart, Lou Dallman and the entire WNIC team, Gordon Chevrolet, and of course everyone who called in and made a pledge. I also want to thank Jeanette and Meredith at the Make-A-Wish Foundation for including me in this fantastic event!

Top Secret! Confidential! Shhhhhhh . . .

That’s what we were told about practically everything we did in L.A.! It was so secret that even we (the contestants) didn’t know what we were going to do until we did it. Unfortunately, I really can’t talk much about the L.A. trip. If I do, I get fined a lot more than a Miss Michigan could afford to pay. All I can say is this - for the first time in Miss America’s 86 year history, all 52 contestants met months before the pageant to prepare to become the next Miss America. All the super secret stuff we did will be featured in a 2 hour special to be aired before the Miss America finals. In addition – YOU will have the chance to vote for Miss Congeniality! It is definitely worth watching . . .

I will say that the entire experience was overall very exciting, fun, challenging and interesting. Camera’s followed us for three full days documenting our every move! I have definitely gained a newfound sense of empathy for anyone who participates in a reality show – it can be trying at times. Perhaps the best thing about the experience was the chance to get to know and bond with my Miss America class. I think one of the most stressful parts about competing in a competition like this is the anxiety about not knowing anyone. That is one thing that none of us will have to worry about in January. We have gotten to know practically everyone and already developed some close friendships. Overall, I think that this has the potential to become a valuable part of the Miss America tradition. I can’t wait to see the finished product!

We did have some downtime during filming to enjoy the pool, go shopping and visit the Santa Monica Pier. If you know me at all, you know how I chose to spend my free time. . . at the pool! (and I had a lot of company!) The weather was perfect, the view of the ocean was beautiful, and the pool waiters made sure that we always had enough water and fresh fruit 

On the final night in L.A., we were wisked away for one more final surprise . . . a Miss America party Hollywood style! When our bus arrived at the Kodak Theatre for our first stop, we were greeted by hundreds of people with cameras ready! It was a surreal experience as we each stepped off the bus to screaming fans and walked the corridor to a picturesque view of the ‘Hollywood’ sign in the California mountains. After a million photographs were snapped, we continued down Hollywood Blvd. At our final destination we were welcomed to the Roosevelt Hotel by Mr. Hollywood himself who entertained us with stories of ‘old Hollywood’. Next we were escorted to a candle lit pool deck to rub elbows with former Miss Americas, Marilu Henner (from Taxi), Doris Roberts (aka Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond) and the national Miss America execs. Unfortunately, I did not have a camera that night! Luckily, Emily (Miss PA) snapped some photographs of me and the VIPs. (as soon as she sends them I’ll be sure to post them for you).

Each of us went to sleep that night feeling like a star!

Everything to Gain

In a questionnaire to be submitted to CMT, all the 2007 contestants were asked, “What is the one thing you have learned from competing in pageants?” I’ve learned so much through my Miss America competition through the years, but the most important thing I’ve learned is how to gain from losing. Since our answers were supposed to be kept to one to two sentences and it just kills me to be so concise, I’ve decided to use this space to elaborate on this important life-skill.

Most people have a very narrow definition of ‘losing.’ To the average person ‘losing’ is defined by ‘not winning’. For those of you who may not be familiar with me or the Miss Michigan program, you may not realize that I have made a fairly good pageant career through the years ‘losing’. While I have been fortunate enough to win at the local level (this is necessary in order to qualify for the state competition), my final placement at the state pageant for four years was ‘not the winner’ and thereby the ‘loser’ according to the popular definition.

Fortunately, in the Miss America Organization, ‘not winning’ does not mean ‘losing.’ Sometimes the winner could have won more by losing often than she did by winning on her first try. Furthermore, most times the ‘losers’ actually win more than the winners. Some of the biggest ‘losers’ I know have won more than most of the biggest ‘winners’ I know. If you think is confusing you should try to figure out our new scoring system!

So if ‘not winning’ doesn’t mean ‘losing’ than what does it mean? Well, it can mean many things for different people but the two most obvious are 1) Scholarship Money, and 2) A chance to come back and win more scholarship money! Through the years, I got particularly good at winning by losing. I was able to compete in a total of 13 MAO pageants including 5 at the state level and 2 at the national level! I earned more than $20,000 in scholarships BEFORE winning the state title. This is why I say that it sometimes pays better to lose – I earned more losing than many of our Miss Michigan’s earned winning.

I won a lot of other things besides the scholarships ‘losing’ than I ever would had I ‘won’. I won experience, confidence and grace. I won the ability to laugh at myself. I won the chance to closely watch and learn from 5 other Miss Michigans and create a clear picture of what I would be like in that role. I won the knowledge and time to develop a deep appreciation and respect for MAO. I won the opportunity to know and represent 4 different areas of the state. I won the opportunity to work closely with 4 exceptional women who each taught me something new. Finally, I won the understanding that winning is good – but it isn’t everything. I won and mastered the ability to work harder than I ever thought possible for something and continue to grow. I won the ability to not be afraid of losing. This is perhaps the most valuable thing I have gained – the understanding that all there is to be won through competing in MAO can be won long before the curtain ever opens.

In life, we have the opportunity to gain so much – win or lose. Learning to seek out the rewards and lessons no matter where you finish, is something that I encourage everyone to apply to their lives. You may not get the job, you may not get the house, you may not get the guy – but there is always something to be gained. Look for it. Find it. Claim it. Live it. And never again will you rely on someone else to control how you finish.
